A Panamax Tanker has a size range between 55,000 and 84,999 DWT, with the average size currently being in the region of 75,000 DWT. Panamax Tankers used to be the widest beam vessel able to transit the Panama Canal. However, the recent widening of the canal means the fleet is diversifying and no longer restricted by its maximum beam. Panamax Tankers carry crude oil whilst LR1 vessels carry clean products. The only difference being LR1 vessels have coated cargo tanks.
